National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day is Tuesday, August 4th, 2026.

Name something better than a good chocolate chip cookie? I'll wait, because there is nothing quite as iconic as arguably the world's most famous cookie of all time.

The chocolate chip cookie has origins close to home here- invented at the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts. In the early 1930's, Ruth Graves Wakefield chopped up a Nestlé chocolate bar to add to her butter-drop cookie mix. By 1938, Ruth was working on a cookbook titled Toll House Tried and True Recipes where she included the new invention. Under a year later, and Nestlé struck a deal with Wakefield. They got the rights to her recipe, and she got a lifetime supply of chocolate. Some reports indicate that Ruth was also given one dollar as payment, but that was not confirmed.

As a result of the popular new cookie, Nestlé developed the Toll House Morsels for more efficient baking. That's right- chocolate chips were invented in tandem with the chocolate chip cookie. Up until then, bakers were chopping chocolate bars for recipes.
