From Moo to You: How Wright’s Milk Goes From the Barn to Your Bottle

Updated: Oct 23

Ever wonder what happens between the moment our cows are milked and when that fresh bottle ends up in your fridge? At Wright’s, we’re proud to keep the entire process on-site, minimizing travel, maximizing freshness, and ensuring quality every step of the way.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how our milk moves from moo to you:

Step 1: Happy, Healthy Cows

It all starts in the milking parlor, where milk is collected and stored in a refrigerated stainless steel tank that holds up to 2,000 gallons. From there, it’s pumped up to our dairy building through a state-of-the-art stainless steel pipeline.

Next time you drive into Wright’s, look up! You’ll spot two metal pipes crossing the driveway just before you reach the parking lot. That’s our milk on the move!

Why no milk trucks? Because transporting raw milk by truck agitates it, which can lead to oxidation, reducing quality, taste, and shelf life. Our direct pipeline system helps us avoid that and preserve peak freshness.

Step 2: Separation & Filtration

Once the milk arrives in the dairy, it goes through a separator, which acts like a supercharged centrifuge. This step:

  • Filters out any fine dust or particles

  • Separates the cream from the milk, allowing us to produce whole, 2%, and skim varieties by adjusting the cream content

Step 3: Homogenization

Next, the milk is homogenized—a process where it’s pushed through a small opening at high pressure. This breaks down the cream particles and distributes them evenly, preventing the cream from rising to the top and giving you that smooth, uniform texture in every sip.

Step 4: Pasteurization (HTST)

Our milk is then pasteurized using the High Temperature Short Time (HTST) method. This means it’s:

  • Heated to 165°F

  • Held for 15 seconds

  • Then rapidly chilled to lock in freshness

This process kills harmful bacteria while maintaining the natural taste and nutritional value of the milk.

Step 5: Bottling & Delivery

After pasteurization, the milk flows straight to the bottler, where it’s filled into various container sizes, capped, packed into crates, and sent directly down to our farm store or prepared for local deliveries.

No middlemen. No cross-country hauling. Just real, fresh milk, produced and bottled right here on the farm.

Dairy Quality You Can Trust

Every step of this process is carefully monitored and recorded on a chart, which is inspected quarterly by the state to ensure we’re upholding the highest standards of dairy production.

From cow to crate, we do it all right here at Wright’s so you can trust what’s in your glass. 🥛
